On Thursday morning, May 8, 2025, the Algerian Embassy in Lebanon commemorated the 80th anniversary of the May 8, 1945 massacres. These massacres represent a pivotal moment in the national struggle against French colonialism and embody one of the most horrific forms of colonial oppression faced by the Algerian people in their legitimate aspirations for freedom and independence.
This symbolic occasion was attended by members of the diplomatic and local missions, along with a number of members of the Algerian community residing in Lebanon. The event was held under the theme: "Memory Day... A Day Marked by a Desired Era," reflecting the commemorative and forward-looking dimensions of this event.
The commemoration ceremony featured the raising of the national flag and the playing of the Algerian national anthem, followed by the recitation of Surat Al-Fatiha in memory of the souls of the nation's martyrs who fell in those painful massacres. His Excellency the Algerian Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Kamal Bouchama, also delivered a commemorative speech in which he highlighted the lessons learned from this glorious anniversary, emphasizing the need to consolidate national memory as a fundamental pillar in building collective identity and enhancing historical awareness among the younger generations.
